Right there in black & white: Commute by Ferry

Circular Quay 1938 MDupain

The morning commute on the Kubu ferry. This shot from 1938 is of Circular Quay, of workers disembarking from Balmain or Woolwich, Cremorne or Watson’s Bay or Manly. It’s by Max Dupain, one of Australia’s most well-known photographers of the twentieth century. I love the woman’s suit as she strolls up the platform. I love the coat-collars and cocked hats. I love the glimpse into an ordinary day in Sydney, my home-town, seventy-seven years ago.
